Choosing the right big bag is not merely a matter of finding the biggest possible bag to transport as much product as possible. The product and the conditions in which it will be stored determine what type of FIBC is right for you. Let’s take a look at the most important factors to keep in mind.
The temperature when filling (and during transport)
When looking at the required dimensions, you should not only look at the width and length of your product.
You will need to consider the bulk weight per cubic foot of product you are packaging. You will need to calculate as follows:
pounds of product/pounds per cubic feet=X cubic feet capacity for the bulk bag
Moreover, you’ll need to consider the pallet size and the footprint of the bulk bag. Always ask your supplier about the right size depending on the pallets you are using.
Big Bags are divided into four categories depending on their material. This material differs in how it reacts to combustible materials. We’ve written a blog about this before, but here you find a quick summary:
Apart from the fabric type, the fabric weight also matters. The weight you need is related to how heavy your product will be. Consult your Big Bag supplier to find the right type for you.
We’re not quite done with the material just yet. Related to the main fabric of your FIBC, is the liner or coating you will need.
Basically, a coat or liner stops air and moisture. In some cases, such as for fine powder, they are required to keep the product inside the bag. We’ve put together a detailed blog on all things liner and coating. If you are unsure about what’s right for your product, feel free to reach out to find a fitting solution.
Time to dive into the details. The way you will be filling and emptying the FIBC Bag also affects what kind of FIBC you need. This determines what kind of top and spout you will be needing. Apart from the standard fill spout, you can also choose duffel or open tops, or cone tops with a fill spout.
Then it’s time to look at the bottom: how will the bag be emptied? For the bottom you can go spout, flat or tie-open.
Will you need logo printing, color coded lift loops or document pouches? Talk to your Big Bag supplier to find out how to customize the FIBC to fit your needs perfectly.
