It is clear that things have to change. The way we consume and produce has a huge impact on climate and social problems all across the globe. Many governments and businesses pledge to change, but the overlapping plan comes from the UN.
The United Nations formulated 17 goals for sustainable development in the world. These goals focus on people, production and ultimately the planet. As a universal call to action, their aim is to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve our lives and protect our future, and that of the planet.
The goals are divided into different categories. Number 12 focusses on sustainable consumption and production. As this is where Masterpack can contribute the most, we want to highlight what this goal entails and how we do our part.
Reusing and recycling Big Bags and liners can only be done under specific circumstances. That is why we focus on turning it around: creating as less surplus product as possible, to reduce whatever amount has to be recycled.
With the way we fit and cut our lines, we create as little waste as possible earlier on in the production and supply chain. This saves 10 to 20 percent on waste per liner and tons of kilos on a yearly basis, compared to our competitors. We explained the full process in this blog.
UN Sustainable Consumption and Production Goal 12.3 – By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses
In an earlier blog, we explained more about how Modified Atmosphere is a powerful tool in the battle against food waste. Roughly 30% of all food produced a year, which is 1.3 billion tons worth around $1 trillion, ends up rotting in bins of consumers and retailers. This is due to spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices.
Modified Atmosphere helps battle this problem, especially in the transportation and storage phases. It enables us to conserve dried foods in a way that is of extremely high quality but uses very low energy – and no chemicals.
Products can be stored and transported in bulk in great condition, so they can reach the consumer with minimal loss in quality and limiting the amount of waste. Modified Atmosphere has the ability to reduce post-harvest food waste from 30-40% to 15-20%.
In our manufacturing plant in Bangladesh, we started a project that gives employees and their families more opportunities in education. It is our belief that combining economic success with environmental protection and social responsibility is the only real, sustainable way of doing business.
We have a long way to go, and the only way forward is together. Want to work with a sustainable partner in packaging? Let’s partner up: get in contact with our team today for a better tomorrow.
